Atlantic Hotel Inc. (AHI), the Government-controlled company that manages the Marriott-branded hotel project, says that Monday’s oil dumping incident was done by labourers acting without the authorisation of the contractor.
AHI, in a statement Wednesday evening, said that it conducted an immediate and preliminary inquiry following the report appearing in Tuesday’s edition of Kaieteur News, Tuesday, 21st October, under the headline, “Marriott’s Chinese workers caught dumping drums of waste oil at seawall.”
According to AHI, Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) is contracted for the design and construction of the hotel project.
“SCG reported that labourers employed by SCG, without authorization of SCG’s management, disposed of the contents of three barrels of cement retardant material, which were in storage pending removal from the site as expired material.”
The company said that it has since instituted measures through its site administration to prevent the repetition of this. It is also “fully cooperating with the Guyana Environmental Protection Agency (GEPA), whose team visited the site immediately following the publication of the report in the Kaieteur News. The GEPA will continue to further investigate this matter.”
According to AHI, the contractual agreement requires SCG to “meet minimum LEED (US Green Building Council) certification standards before the hotel is taken over from the contractor.”
On Monday, workers were spotted dumping what appeared to be oil into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, behind Kingston, where the hotel is being built.
The incident was captured on video by two tourists who complained to Kaieteur News.
The workers were stopped by a Coast Guard rank who was stationed at a base nearby. The matter was reported to the Coast Guard Commander.
Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn, when contacted had said it is highly unlikely that permission could have been given to dump the oil.
On Tuesday, the Environmental Protection Agency indicated that a probe had been launched.
