Alpha United put title on the line
By Sean Devers
The much anticipated 20th Annual Mayor’s Cup Football tournament, scheduled to climax on November 30 with the
finals at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, kicks off on Saturday November 1 with three matches at the Victoria ground on the East Coast of Demerara.
The tournament, which will see 24 matches being played, continues on Sunday November 2 with two more games at the Den Amstel ground in West Demerara.
Some of the top teams in the country are expected to vie for supremacy and the half of a million winner’s prize, while the runners up will collect $250,000. The grand finale is fixed for the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground on Sunday November 30 at 21:00hrs after the third place play off is contested from 19:00hrs.
The third place team will receive $150,000, while $100,000 is up for grabs for the team finishing in the fourth position and the Slingers Sound System from the West Side will provide pulsating music during the Semi-Finals and Final.
According to the tournament’s Executive Coordinator and former National Coach Lennox Arthur, a riveting tournament is anticipated since the nation’s leading players should be on show and large crowds expected. Arthur explained that the entry cost for the preliminary rounds is just $500, while fans will have to pay $1,000 to enter the venues from the Quarter Final stage which will commence on Wednesday November 19.
They are still in talks with potential sponsors and are soliciting sponsorship from corporate Guyana.
Defending Champions Alpha United, who beat Slingers in last year’s final, will have in their line-up Dwight Peters and Dwayne Jacobs when they being their title defence against the winner of the third round match-up between Cougars and Den Amstel in West Berbice.
Pele could be spearheaded by Shemroy Arthur and Joshua Kamal while Conquerors should have Trevon Lythcott and Eon Alleyne in their line-up.
The Guyana Defence Force will be spearheaded by Usi Phillips and William Europe, Western Tigers will have Solomon Austin in their unit, Riddium Squad should include Orville Stewart and Dorudlee Stewart, while last year’s losing finalist Slingers, who play their first match in the third round against Rosignol United in West Berbice, will pin their hopes on Tichard Joseph and Devon Millington.
