…compliments of Freedom Life Ministries
October is the official “Month of the Elderly” and to show appreciation to the country’s senior
citizens, the Women on the Move group of Freedom Life Ministries (Georgetown), in collaboration with Milady’s Hair Salon, treated the residents of the Palms Geriatric Institute to a day of free pampering and full body makeovers.
The project was initiated a year ago by the women’s group, which saw it as a way of “giving back to the elderly” and thanking them for their contributions to society.
The Women on the Move group has been conducting a number of similar outreach programmes throughout Guyana which are directed at helping disadvantaged groups around Guyana.
To ensure that the institution’s inhabitants received the best treatment yesterday, the committee arranged for a team of 22 cosmetic and beauticians to provide haircuts, hairdressings, facial makeovers, manicure and pedicure treatment to approximately 100 residence of the geriatric home.
The Women on the Move also carried out makeovers at the bedsides for some of the elderly who are bedridden.
The benevolent volunteers told Kaieteur News that they were immensely humbled to provide their services to the elderly patients, who were very cooperative and receptive to the process.
Meanwhile, the recipients expressed gratitude to the organizers for having treated them to what one resident said felt “like a day at the spa.” Even staff members of the institution were pampered, and commented that it was a much needed break from the routine of the geriatric home.
The Women on the Move also handed out consolation bags to the residents, which included toiletries
that were specified for men and women.
