The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) yesterday called on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to update the nation on the Commission’s state of readiness for Local Government Elections.
As he hosted the Party’s weekly press conference yesterday at Freedom House, PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee said that the recently released Revised List of Electors (RLE) indicates the preparation for General Elections as opposed to Local Government Elections.
He told the media that it is necessary that GECOM let the Guyanese people know what systems and preparations are in place should these elections be called.
Rohee said that his Party has noted the many public statements and editorials calling for Local Government Elections but said that “the critical question remains is GECOM’s Ready?”
He questioned as well, “Are Guyanese comfortable with the preparation and information being released by GECOM on this very sensitive matter?”
The General Secretary noted that the PPP is very apprehensive that enough preparation and public relations has been done to the relevant extent so as to ensure that every eligible voter will be in his/her constituency list.
He said, therefore, “It is our contention that GECOM should do physical verifications within the communities to place persons on their respective lists, thus allowing for a fair and transparent process whenever elections are called.”
Rohee said that the PPP is of the opinion that since the Claims and Objections period has concluded, GECOM will be in a much better position to work assiduously towards having the correct demarcation of boundaries and proper constituency lists for the possibility of Local Government Elections.
Rohee said that it is time for GECOM to make a public declaration on “this very sensitive matter” and to fulfill its constitutional mandate of ensuring that every eligible Guyanese is placed on the OLE and no one is disenfranchised.
