Police have recommended charges against the Ministry of Education official who struck down 13-year-old Jameel Mounter.
An official said that the file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) late last week, while explaining that the DPP will make the final decision on whether the accused driver be charged.
Mounter, of North-East Stewartville Housing Scheme, was walking on the West Coast Demerara Public Road with two of his cousins when he was allegedly struck from behind. He remained on life support for several days before passing away two Mondays ago.
A cousin of the injured lad told Kaieteur News that they were walking in single file when a car “came from nowhere” and struck Jameel.
However, investigators say that the cousins were on the wrong side of the road at the time, and that Mounter wandered into the car’s path after one of the cousins hit him.
The teen was laid to rest last Thursday, and his father, Melwin Mounter, confirmed that the Education Ministry paid all expenses for the funeral.
Mr. Mounter indicated yesterday that the family is willing to accept a financial settlement from the Education Ministry, even though this may mean that charges will be dropped against the driver. “I will give them (The Ministry) up to this week, and then will go to them to see what they have to say.”
The family had initially refused to accept money for transportation expenses to visit the young man when he was hospitalized.
