Despite the unfortunate withdrawal of Team Coco’s from this year’s Ministry of Culture Youth
and Sports ‘Ride for Life’ 5-Stage cycle road race yesterday, the third stage from Wales, West Bank Demerara to Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo saw a blistering performance from Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams who crossed the line unchallenged.
The Unattached Williams was the only rider to clock under one hour in the shortest stage of the five. He crossed the line in 59 Minutes 32 Seconds and in the process also won 5 of the sprint prizes to underline his dominance of the stage.
Paul De Nobrega (Team Alanis) took the second place in this stage and was timed at 1:00:43; USA based Scott Savory (Lupus Racing Team) was next in 1:01:11 followed by Robin Persaud (Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club) 1:01:18, Geron Williams (Continental Cycle Club) 1:01:19, Alanzo Greaves (Roraima Bikers Club) 1:01:19 and Shaquelle Agard (Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club) 1:01:40 occupying the other top seven positions.
The race started off with 27 starters outside the Wales Police Station with Director of Sport Neil Kumar in attendance. At the Demerara Harbour Bridge seven riders were setting the pace, Geron Williams, Alanzo Greaves, Marlon Williams, Shaquille Agard, Robin Persaud, Paul DeNobrega and Scott Savory.
Agard was eventually dropped as the intensity increased. Marlon Williams powered away from the leaders at Orgenstein on the East Bank of Essequibo to take the stage in fine style.
His efforts saw him moving up the ranks to fourth position overall with Alanzo Greaves in command going into today’s fourth stage in the Cinderella County of Essequibo pedaling off at Supenaam at 07:30hrs proceeding to Charity and back to Suddie for the finish covering 62 miles.
The final stage tomorrow will start in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden at 08:30hrs and conclude on Carifesta Avenue in the City.
