Wife killer sentenced to death

The sentence was handed down by Justice Brassington Reynolds at the High Court in Georgetown.
Singh, a thirty-year-old mother of two, was murdered at Helena Number One Village, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on May 29, 2011. According to reports, Singh, who hails from Richmond Village, Essequibo, was stabbed multiple times about her body.
Details of the matter suggested that Brown, who had shared a common-law relationship with the woman, became enraged after she left their Mahaica residence to visit her children in Essequibo. The woman had promised to return within a certain time but when she did not, Brown went in search of her.
The man eventually caught up with his wife at a relative’s house in Mahaica, where she had sought refuge.
According to reports, Brown, in a fit of rage, stabbed his reputed wife several times about her body. An eyewitness had recounted that the accused only stopped when the woman ceased screaming and was lying on the ground, gasping for breath.
Moments after the incident, the injured woman was taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital but was eventually transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she succumbed.
Brown, who was described as a “habitual resident” of the Georgetown Prisons was subsequently arrested and indicted for her murder.
The woman’s demise shocked Essequibians, especially residents of Richmond Village. Grieving relatives had recalled that Singh left the Essequibo Coast months before the incident and had briefly returned to the ‘Cinderella County’ to transact business, relative to the wellbeing of her two children.
The trial was conducted before Justice Reynolds and a mixed twelve-member jury. Brown was represented by Attorney-at-Law,

The State Attorney called a total of seven witnesses to the stand, who gave sworn evidence in the matter. Among the witnesses was Carol Brown, a cousin of the accused, who had reportedly witnessed the stabbing.
After hours of deliberation yesterday, the mixed twelve-member panel of jurors returned to the courtroom and announced the verdict; they had found the accused guilty of murder.
