LIAT yesterday celebrated 58 years of aviation service to the Caribbean region.
‘The Caribbean Airline’ is one of the longest and most prominent airlines operating in this part of the world, providing service to most of the island nations.
In a public missive to mark the occasion, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, David Evans said that the airline continues to work through many challenges. He expressed gratitude to the many staffers who have worked with the company throughout the years, and he thanked customers and stakeholders for their continued support.
Evans highlighted that getting to this point (58 years) has not been an easy task. He said that the company continues to operate in an environment which presents the airline with many challenges.
“As we all witnessed this week with the passage of Tropical Storm Gonzalo, the storm disrupted our operations and inconvenienced many of our customers.”
The CEO reiterated his appreciation of the company’s employees and customers for their patience and support, “as we work together in the recovery efforts.” Several small islands have been hit by the recently passed storm, with some currently undergoing reconstruction phases.
The LIAT CEO underscored the importance of the airline’s focus on safety: “In spite of the continued challenges we can once again look back at our proud achievements. Our safety record and continued commitment to this region are just two of the many things we can be proud of.”
Evans charged that this 58th anniversary is very significant as it will see LIAT completing the transition from its Dash-8 fleet to its new ATR fleet.
LIAT was founded in Montserrat in October 1956 by Saint Kitts-born Mr. Frank Delisle.
“The airline has grown over the years and is now the main mode of transportation for people travelling between the islands, serving 18 destinations,” the company’s CEO highlighted.
LIAT operates more than 600 flights per week from Santo Domingo in the north to Guyana in the south – providing the most extensive inter-island network of any carrier in the region. The airline was said to have transported over 800,000 passengers around the region last year.
Recently LIAT reorganized its flight plans and added additional flights to some destinations. They also reorganized their services to accommodate more passengers using the smaller carrier to in-transit with international carriers.
Locally, LIAT added three more flights from Grantley Adams Airport to Ogle International. The airline currently operates 10 flights on a weekly basis.
