The eight edition of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) Ride for Life Cycle Road Race pedaled
off yesterday in fine fashion with local boy Alanzo Greaves fo Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) winning the first stage.
Greaves clocked One Hour 37 minutes 49 seconds to win the stage which commenced at 07:30hrs from Corriverton Police Station and concluded at Alexander Street in New Amsterdam, Berbice – a distance of 46.6 miles (75km).
Team Coco’s Ruben Campanioni of Cuba was second to Greaves in 1:41:47 followed by his teammate and fellow Cuban Camillo Ulloa. Guyanese Geron Williams of Continental Cycle Club placed fourth, another Cuban also from team Coco’s, Carlos Ostino finished fifth and local rider Robin Persaud sixth.
Fifty-six of the 63 registered cyclists started the race and Greaves, Persaud, Williams, Akeem Arthur, Shaquille Agard, Campanioni, Ostino, Yohan Robayo and Ulloa dominated the early proceedings, eventually leaving Arthur behind.
The riders continued to battle their way in the Ancient County but enduring stiff challenges from his rivals, Greaves powered his way to the finish line, taking one prime in the process. Williams, Ostino and Campanioni took a prime each.
Stage Two – Campanioni won this stage which pedaled off at 14:00hrs from old Rosignol Stelling, West Berbice and proceeded to Carifesta Avenue in Georgetown for the finish. He clocked 2:19:12, covering a distance of 60.4 miles (96km).
Ostino, Christopher Holder, Verun Maharaj, Paul De Nobrega and Albert Philander set the early pace on this leg but they were strongly challenged by Scott Savory, Marlon Williams, Michael Anthony and Greaves who destroyed the main Peloton leaving just a few in sight.
However, Team Coco’s Chris Holder, Darren Matthews, Campanioni, and Ostino along with Verun Maharaj and Paul De Nobrega took over up front and as they passed through Mahaicony, the leaders had two minutes and 10 seconds on the chasing pack which was led by Marlon Williams, Michael Anthony,
Greaves, Geron Williams among some others.
In bright sunshine, they continued the grueling encounter before Campanioni and Ospino separated themselves from the others, but Campanioni it was that crossed the finish line ahead of Ospino who took two primes.
As anticipated, Team Coco’s dominated this stage taking the top six spots. Defending champion Raynauth Jeffery grabbed third place in 2:22:12 ahead of fellow Guyanese Christopher Holder in 2:22:16. Ulloa placed fifth and Junior Niles sixth. Darren Matthews won one prime.
