The GT Beer/Berbice Cup KO football Tournament organized and hosted by the Monedderlust FC in tandem with Starlight Generation is heading for a grand climax as preparations among the last four remaining teams intensified during the last week.
The semi-finals slated for this coming Saturday (October 18th) will guarantee a Championship showdown the following Saturday between a team from Berbice and one from East Coast for the first prize of four hundred thousand dollars and the Champion’s trophy.
Judging from the comments made by both coaches of the first semi-final – Cougars FC versus Monedderlust FC – fans can expect a close encounter.
“We really worked hard at training sessions with a lot of emphasis on finishing since I thought that was an area of weakness and concern. I think the team now fully understands what is expected of them. Team spirits are high and the players are determined to give an improved performance from the opening game of the Tournament”, stated Coach Raul ‘Jug-head’ Huntley.
The Monedderlust Coach added that although he is confident of advancing to the final he is not taking Cougars lightly, “We never take any team for granted and despite Cougars being in a rebuilding stage Coach Carrington has done a wonderful job and must be complimented. I honestly expect a good challenge.”
“Our keys to winning must be converting our chances and of course our home support. This is our turf and we are ready to defend it”, Huntley advised.
His opposite, Phillip Carrington is equally optimistic of victory, “Although they have the psychological home advantage and a more seasoned unit we are confident of a win.”
“Our preparations have been going as well as can be expected so far and the general feeling in the camp is good. I am hopeful that this atmosphere can be transferred to the field of play come Saturday,” Carrington disclosed.
“The squad is pretty young in age and inexperienced, but very hungry for success. Once we execute our game plan we will succeed,” the former national goalkeeper indicated.
The New Amsterdam-based Cougars FC will meet with the defending Champions and host, Monedderlust FC at 18:00hrs in the opener on Saturday.
