A man who along with his son ambushed and brutally murdered another man before escaping, and being on the run has
been captured and remanded to jail. Harrynarine Mathura, called Casreep, 49, of Haswell, Port Mourant, Corentyne, on Tuesday appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge. According to Prosecutor Sergeant Philip Shariff the accused, on October 5, last, at Well Tank Dam, Miss Phoebe Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice, killed Rajeshwar Ramdhani called ‘Suraj’, 20, of Tain Settlement, Corentyne Berbice.
The man was unrepresented and was remanded until November 10, next, when the matter is expected to continue in the Whim Magistrate’s court.
Mathura was arrested and taken into police custody on Thursday last after investigators got word of his hideout. His son is still on the run.
Ramdhani, was fatally stabbed to his chest shortly after midnight on October 5, last, allegedly by the man and his son. A post mortem examination performed on the body by Dr. Nehaul Singh had given the cause of death as shock and haemorrhage due to stab wounds to his chest.
Ramdhani and his brother had left home earlier during the evening to go to a wake house in the village. Sometime during the night, they left and went to another house where a wedding celebration was taking place. It was there that an altercation broke out.
As the man and his brother were heading home along Well Tank Dam, they were attacked by Mathura and his son who were waiting in ambush at a dark and lonely spot.
One of the attackers pulled out a knife and plunged it into Ramdhani’s chest. They had also attacked his brother, Daniel, who had to run for his life and hid by lying flat on a dark and lonely parapet.
Ramdhani, was picked up and rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
