One-time Kashif and Shanghai Champion, Victoria Kings easily disposed of New Amsterdam United 3-1, while Ann’s Grove made light work of Golden Grove Stars with a 5-1 drubbing when the GT Beer/Berbice Cup KO football tournament continued on Saturday last at the Monedderlust FC ground in Number Five Village, West Coast Berbice.
The Kings proved their superiority by virtually sealing the win at the end of the first period with a comfortable 3-0 advantage against a NA United side that offered little resistance.
Aubrey Gibson put Kings ahead in the 28th minute and his ever-green striking partner, Winston Pompey doubled the score ten minutes later. A minute before the half, Seon Robinson made it 3-0 to end a most dominant period watched by another fair-sized crowd.
In the 2nd segment the Kings continued to dictate the pace of the game but failed to add to their tally and in the 70th minute they were reduced to ten when Sherlock Dowden received his 2nd Yellow Card and was ejected. United netted a consolation goal 4 minutes into injury time thanks to Adrian Adams.
In the 2nd encounter, Ann’s Grove, despite playing an East Coast League fixture earlier in the day, went on a goal rampage against an ordinary looking Golden Grove side.
Goals by Kevon Barry (11th), Kevin Bailey (26) and Dean Rogers (31) gave Ann’s Grove a 3-0 lead at the half of the 80-minute affair.
In the 2nd half, however, it was Golden Grove who found the back of the net first as Randy Stoby scored in the 63rd minute.
Ten minutes later Nkosi Denny responded for Ann’s Grove to make it 4-1. In the 3rd minute of injury time Shemar Barry made it 5-1 when he added his name to the scorer’s list to end a miserable night for Golden Grove.
The two winners will now meet in the other semi-final to guarantee the 8-team KO competition an East Coast versus Berbice final for the $400,000 first prize. The other semi-final will be an all-Berbice affair with Cougars FC opposing the Cup holders, Monedderlust FC.
The two semi-finals will be played this coming Saturday, October 18th, while the 3rd place play-off and championship match is set for Saturday October 25th.
