Providence dominoes team gave their supporters much to cheer about when they
withstood stiff challenges from their rivals to win the Strikers SC dominoes tournament when the final was contested on Thursday night last in Meadowbrook.
Providence posted 83 games to win ahead of TNT with 79 and F and H on 78.
Sean Davis led the scoring for the winners with 17 games, Junior Smith made 15 and Deon Telford 12. Ryan Boodhoo marked 16 for TNT, while Shawn Morgan and Trevor Smith assisted 15 each. Orin Boston top scored with F and H with 17; Hazim Hakh registered 15, Charles Dapon 14 and Wayne Austin 13 for F and H.
Providence claimed a trophy and $145,000, TNT took home a trophy and $75,000 and F and H a trophy and $50,000.
The competition was organized as part of Richie Richardson, a long standing member of Strikers Dominoes Club, birth anniversary and was sponsored by Big Boss Trucking Service, Dynasty Sports Club, Demerara Ice Company Ltd, South View Tavern, Faye Joseph, Patterson and Patterson Associates and Strikers SC.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Richardson congratulated the winning team and thanked the members of Strikers SC.
Meanwhile, the Faye Joseph and S. Collymore tournament commenced last night at Gaulding Place and will conclude tonight at the said venue. In an invited comment, Joseph, the president of the Georgetown Dominoes Association (GDA) expressed gratitude to Providence, TNT and F and H on their performances and said she was impressed with the high level of discipline shown. She pointed out that dominoes is on the rise adding that another tournament is in the pipeline before the million dollar competition in November.
Guyana won the men’s team title at the World Dominoes Council championship recently in Barbados, while the female team placed second. The President also thanked the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and Director of Sport Neil Kumar for their input in making the trip to Barbados possible and looked to their continued support. She congratulated the players for keeping the Golden Arrow Head flying high. (Zaheer Mohamed)
