Main Street was cause for much celebration yesterday as the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport launched Mashramani 2015 under the theme “One People, One Culture, One Celebration”.
Spectators and officials crowded the vicinity in front of the Culture Ministry. The event also provided a sneak peak of the highly anticipated festivities which will be held on February 23, next year; marking the nation’s 45th Republic Anniversary.
Spectators were treated to a programme which featured dancing, drumming, calypso & chutney performances as well as a glimpse of the costumes that the public can expect for next year’s Mashramani parade.
The launch also included the unveiling of the 2015 Mashramani logo by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, who alluded to the celebrations as being a vehicle to highlight Guyana’s cultural diversity and integration. According to him, the event should always promote the country’s strong historical heritage, while providing an outlet for the public to commemorate the country’s anniversary as a Republic in an environment of unity.
“It is really a display of our diversity,” said the Minister in his address, “there are close to 60,000 to 70,000 people who would line the streets to see these wonderful costumes…as we celebrate not only Guyaneseness but to celebrate our identity.”
Minister Anthony clarified that Mashramani is not only about having fun, but that it is also meant to develop the creative and intellectual side of Guyanese culture. He elaborated on the various events which the festival brings with it such as calypso, chutney, soca, steel pan and literary competitions.
The Culture Minister also expressed gratitude for the support the celebration receives from corporate sponsors like Republic Bank, which has helped to promote and even provided training sessions for
participants in the Junior & Senior Steel Pan competitions.
However, he still reinforced that the event is always open to more private sector sponsors, and stated that he plans on “recruiting” more sponsors for the 2015 celebrations
The launch was chaired by popular Guyanese comedian and entertainment personality Chow Pow, with cultural performances by Otiskha and Dubraj Tassa. The crowd was also treated to rousing performances from Junior Calypso Monarch Diana Chapman and Soca Monarch Kwesi “Ace”.
