The Kashif and Shanghai (K&S) organization are currently planning their 25th Annual football tournament. According to Director Kashif Muhammad the tournament will be played at the senior club level and they are hoping to kick start on November 14.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Muhammad said that they have already notified the various sub-associations, including Georgetown, Linden, East Bank, Bartica, West Demerara, Berbice and East Coast, as well as the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) adding that they are awaiting a response from the GFF. Muhammad informed that they are currently in talks with their major sponsors. The tournament will take a different format with 69 teams taking part in the initial stages which will be contested on a knockout basis in the various sub-associations with 20 teams going through to the finals.
Muhammad pointed out that they are trying to revitalize the game locally. “There is no other competition in the air so we are trying to revive football since there is a dearth on the sport,” he added. He stated that prize money will be given by the organizers to the winners of the various sub-associations and the proceeds from the preliminary stages will go toward the sub-associations. After the conclusion of the preliminaries on November 30, the tournament will break for two weeks before the finals commence on December 14 and conclude on January 1, 2015.
Muhammad informed that they are not finished with the junior tournament and plans several activities for the youngsters, will be announced, while they have approached the Ministry of Education for a suitable slot on their calendar to host the schools tourney during next year at a period not clashing with the extremely well established Digicel event.
He noted that at present, nothing is on the cards for yearend senior football and they have decided to step in and stage the event this year for the seniors in the seeming absence.
