Sergeant in alleged $6M bail, “child support” fraud on desk duty

Investigations are said to be ongoing in the matter involving a Police Sergeant accused of stealing some $6M in bail and ‘child support’ money from the Leonora Police Station. The rank has been removed from his position as Financial Officer and is currently conducting desk duties.
In a follow-up, ‘D’ Division Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police Ian Amsterdam said that the matter has been taken over by the Force’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID). He explained to Kaieteur News that the rank is on open arrest and is currently performing desk duties which involve answering the phone and collecting messages.
Amsterdam said that there has been no update on the matter, but he is aware that the investigation is still active, as other ranks are being called to give evidence for the case. The Commander explained further that such a matter would take time to investigate in order to build the case against the Sergeant.
He said it would have to be determined where the money was stolen from, over what period of time, and how it was stolen. When asked, the Commander said it is not strange that the policeman is still on duty at the said location where the alleged crime was committed. He assured that the officer is not in any way able to obstruct the investigation.
However, the police officer’s presence at the Leonora Station does not seem to be sitting well with other ranks. The matter resurfaced when some ranks expressed dissatisfaction at the way the matter was being addressed. They claimed that the officer is still at the police station, seated at a desk, when other ranks have been dismissed, relocated, and even sent to remote jungle locations for less than the allegations against the Sergeant.
Amsterdam said, however, that the Sergeant is in hot water, because he would have been the one responsible for the collection of money. “He was responsible for the money and anything missing, he would have to account for it,” the Commander stated.
Amsterdam said regular audits of the station’s finances are conducted every two weeks by various officers, so that a report could be submitted to superiors. When an audit was done in August and the money was found to be missing, fingers were pointed at the Sergeant.
It is believed that the alleged culprit siphoned off some $6M comprising bail and payments for child maintenance over a period of years. There were suggestions that the fraud could exceed $8M.
The fraud was said to be unearthed after the recently appointed Divisional Commander ordered an audit of the station’s finances.
The Sergeant has been the station’s Finance Officer for several years. He was said to have held that position for some 10 years, but has been a member of the Force for about 15 years.
