Police are currently saying 20-year-old Terrence Welch, the young man who was severely beaten by Devonshire Castle residents in the wee hours of Sunday last, was found with drugs in a bag.
According to further information, Welch has since admitted to the possession of the illicit substance.
No one has been arrested in connection with Welch’s beating.
The man’s mother, Lucy Welch, has however indicated that the police informed her that when her son is discharged, he would be given the opportunity to identify the persons who have beaten him.
The young man, who hails from Dartmouth Village, remains in the male ward of the Suddie Public Hospital under police guard. He is nursing a deep chop to his right foot and a cut in his head. The latter cut, which is close to his temple, required fourteen stitches.
Welch has, however, not been implicated in the alleged rape of a Devonshire Castle woman.
Lucy Welch said that her son had left Adventure around 4 a.m. on Sunday last and was transported to Anna Regina. Unable to get transportation at that time, Welch said her son decided to walk from Anna Regina.
She said that when he reached Devonshire Castle, a man approached him and immediately started to beat him. Other residents were subsequently alerted and joined in the beating. Welch said residents proceeded to tie her son’s neck with a rope before chopping him with a cutlass and beating him with a piece of iron, to the head. The mother claimed her son was subsequently dragged in the village by someone on a motorbike.
“They beat my son with the intention to kill him.”
Lucy Welch is calling on the relevant authorities to look into her son’s beating.
Meanwhile, the tension since the alleged rape of a mother of four in Devonshire Castle is rising, as the residents seem to be randomly attacking strangers who happen to be in the village.
The 32-year-old woman has indicated that she was attacked by a man who had broken into her house. The man reportedly proceeded to beat the woman before dragging her over a barbed wire fence where he allegedly had sex with her.
