…President cancels visit to area for Village Day
An East Canje cane cutter was on Sunday evening shot dead at Bara Cara, some 75 miles up the Canje River.
Dead is Ramraj Basdeo, called ‘Wabble’, 29, a cane cutter of 850 New Area Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice, sustained a bullet to the head around 20:30 hrs. He was reportedly embroiled in an altercation with a resident of the area over a woman.
When Kaieteur News visited Basdeo parents’ residence, preparations were being made for the wake. Both his parents are unwell, his father Navendra Basdeo, suffers from hypertension, while his mother Kameldeo Basdeo suffers from hypotension.
The distraught man stated that he last saw his son on Saturday morning around 09:00 hrs when he arrived home from work. His son did not work that day. The man said that his son dressed and left home. He said that about an hour later, his son called and informed him to tell his mother that he would not be around for a few days.
He did not give him many details. He did not question him either because it was not the first time he will be away from home.
He said that he was at home around midnight on Sunday when the police visited his home and enquired if ‘Wabble’ lives there. After he answered in the affirmative, they asked him few more questions such as how long he left home, where he went, who else lives there. He was then told that his son got shot. He enquired if it was serious, but they did not answer.
He said that after the police asked him to accompany them to the hospital and to walk with his ID card he realized that it was serious. At the hospital he was initially not allowed to see his son. He said that he spoke to the doctor, who asked him a few questions about his personal well being.
Soon after he collapsed; his pressure had skyrocketed. When he was eventually able to see his son he had a bullet wound to the centre of his forehead. The back of his head had a larger exit hole. He also had what appeared to be marks of violence about his body.
The man said that it was not the first time that his son visited the area before and from his recollection it was his third. He understands that his son would visit farmers in the area.
He wants justice for his son. He said that he was informed that his son visited the area with two other men, who after giving statements were released. He is questioning why the men were released so early.
The men, he understands, stated that they were not with Basdeo when he was shot. They were a little distance away when they heard a gunshot. When they went to the boat they saw him dead. He understands that his son’s bicycle is being used by someone else.
However Kaieteur News understands that the dead man was friendly with a woman up the river. He allegedly eventually became embroiled in an argument with the husband. The altercation escalated with the woman being severely beaten by her husband. The man called ‘Baige’, eventually sought out Basdeo and shot him in his head.
He was transported to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The man leaves to mourn his two sisters, parents and other relatives.
The police left early on Monday morning on the difficult journey to conduct further investigation. The suspect has not been arrested.
The shooting forced President Donald Ramotar and his entourage to cancel their planned visit to the area for the Community Village day.
