Glenn Lall is the most fearless individual I have ever met. He fears no man; and nothing can prevent him from standing up for what he believes.
There have only been two times that I have seen him breakdown and cry. When his mother died, I was by his side when he could not contain his emotions. And when his pressmen were slaughtered at Eccles, Glenn fell to pieces when he saw his workers lying lifeless. Those were the only two times that I have seen him fragile and vulnerable.
Over the years, however, since he began to unearth the corruption within the PPPC administration, I have been concerned for his safety. I have told him on more than one occasion that the ruling elite and their cronies were going to get him.
I told him that he was standing all alone against a formidable enemy. He would always shrug his shoulders and say, “In life, if you don’t stand up for something, you will fall for anything.”
I warned him repeatedly, those who are benefitting from plundering the public treasury and State resources were going to kill him. I cautioned him to be careful about his movements. I have often passed by Kaieteur News and seen him playing dominoes on the pavement with staffers. I would stop, call him over, and tell him that he was in the open and could be targeted. He would again shrug his shoulders and say, “When your time reach, it reach.”
This shows his fearless nature. But deep in his heart, Glenn believes that when your time comes to go, there is nothing you can do about it.
This is a man who has found his purpose in life. I respect him greatly for this. He believes that he was put on Earth for a purpose. To be faithful to his God, Glenn has to fulfill that mission.
But still I worry, not just for him but for Guyana. I have asked myself a question. I have asked myself if anything happens to Glenn Lall, if the Kaieteur News is forced to shut its doors tomorrow, what is going to happen to Guyana? What is going to be the future of this country if there is no Glenn Lall and there is no Kaieteur News?
Those who are doing what they want with the resources of this country will have things their own way. We would all be under threat. They will take over this country and run it like if it is their family business. They will walk all over our rights and do as they please with our women and girl-children.
One man has been standing up against those who want to completely takeover this country. One man has stood up to the public enemy. That man has been Glenn Lall.
We owe it to Glenn Lall to now stand by his side. But we also owe it to ourselves and our children because, God forbid, if anything should happen to Glenn Lall; if Glenn Lall and Adam Harris are jailed tomorrow, if Kaieteur News should be forced to close down, then all of us will be doomed. Make no mistake about it.
Those who are today going after Glenn Lall want him silenced. That much has already been made public by recent disclosures. There is a high-level political conspiracy being hatched against Glenn Lall and the Kaieteur News. In any other part of the world, there would have been mass protests had such a thing happened. There are forces out to get Glenn Lall. They are prepared to frame him and lynch him.
But do you believe that when they finish destroying him they will stop. No, they will devour all of us. That is the nature of a beast. It knows no limits.
What sort of future will the children of Guyana have with this beast on the loose? It is time for all Guyana – citizens, political parties, civil society, religious organizations, the private sector, professional associations and organizations etc – to stand in defence of Kaieteur News. Our very future is at stake.
