Players from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Guyana Police Force (GPF), Pepsi Hornets, Yamaha Caribs and University of Guyana (UG) Wolves will today square off for the right to be crowned champion of the Windjammer Hotel & Cuisine/Golden Brook/Toney Sevens League which opens, at the National Park Rugby Field starting 15:00hrs.
The League, which is organised by the Guyana Rugby Football Union, will see the Pepsi Hornets led by National Captain Ryan Gonsalves square off against Theodore Henry and the Yamaha Caribs.
Dwayne Schroeder and his GDF troops are set to face UG Wolves in the following game, while the Guyana Police Force will try to detain Pepsi Hornets in the day’s third game.
UG Wolves and Yamaha Caribs and GDF versus GPF will conclude the day’s proceedings.
The next round of matches will be played on October 11 with five more games with the final set for October 18.
The tournament dubbed the ‘Road to Mexico’ is being sponsored by Windjammer Hotel, Pomeroon Oil Company under its Golden Brook Brand and Sports Journalist Rawle Toney.
It will be used to help select Guyana’s team for the North America Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Sevens Championship, to be held in Mexico City, Mexico from December 3 to 4.
Guyana dominated the NACRA Sevens from 2006 -11, before relinquishing the title to Mexico in 2012.
The team did not participate in last year’s competition.
