Victim died of multiple injuries
A post mortem examination conducted on the body of accident victim, Rayshan Cook, revealed that he died of multiple injuries sustained during the accident.
There were reports that the 21-year-old motorcyclist, who was killed in a collision on the West Coast Demerara Public Road, had been drinking moments before his death.
However, his mother, Edith Cook, said that based on the PM report her son had not been imbibing. She said the PM report revealed that at the time of his death, her son had no alcohol in his system.
“I still in shock. I don’t even know what to say about this situation he was my only son. He used to be with me. He was my company because his two sisters don’t live with me. They live overseas.”
Cook reported that the one of persons involved in the accident has since expressed sympathy.
“One driver’s wife contacted me to say that they were sorry and asked if there is anything they could do to help but I told them that sorry or no form of compensation can bring back my son. He is already gone. Not even justice can compensate for him now,” the woman lamented.
Cook, who was employed with Transport and Harbours Department reportedly died on the spot after he was struck by the two cars in the vicinity of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara. He was heading to his residence at Crane Housing Scheme, WCD at the time of the accident and was struck by two vehicles, a Toyota Raum HC 1536 and a Toyota Premio, PNN 5924.
A police press released stated that investigations have so far revealed that Cook was riding motorcycle CE 4340 when he collided with two motor vehicles.
However an eyewitness recounted that the two cars which killed to the motorcyclist, had been speeding along the West Demerara Public Road.
The eyewitness claimed that the young man, who had been riding his motorcycle had stopped at the side of the road to answer his cell phone, when he was struck by a speeding Toyota Raum car and then run over by the Toyota Premio.
The two vehicles were reportedly racing along the public road when Cook, who was headed in the opposite direction, was hit.
Jemeil Henry, a close friend of the deceased, noted that the two cars were considerably damaged and the motorcycle was destroyed. Henry arrived at the scene shortly after the incident.
He recalled that he when arrived at the scene his friend was lying in pool of blood in the middle of the road and the cars were parked a reasonable distance away. Henry said that the number plate had been removed from the Toyota Raum.
The drivers of the motor vehicles were subsequently taken into police custody and the damaged motorcars were impounded at the Leonora Police Station.
Cook, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, will be laid to rest today. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
