President Donald Ramotar used Thursday’s launching of the 2014 Guyexpo Trade Fair to accuse sections of the media of scaring away foreign investors.
Speaking to visitors at the Sophia Exhibition Centre, Ramotar said that while the Administration has established strong partnerships, media reportage could harm everything. He said that certain sections of the media seem determined to continue to distort and slander the government.
He said that this irresponsible type of behavior could damage the reputation of the country and moreso, affect the economy.
“There seems to be a deliberate attempt to scare investors and this puts the country in harm’s way,” the Head of State told the gathering which consisted of government ministers and members of the diplomatic community.
According to Ramotar, his Administration would continue to build and forge partnerships and push ahead, despite the negativity.
He said that Government is ready to work with anyone who is willing to ensure that transformative projects such as the hydro electricity and airport expansion projects materialize. Ramotar insisted too, that the doors to his party are never closed to those who want to look into the welfare of the country.
The President insisted that under his Administration, Government has been able to restore what he called a “broken down infrastructure”. He said that citizens now have to look at taking Guyana to greater heights and achieving faster growth rates.
To do this, Guyanese need more developed infrastructure so that they could rapidly industrialize the country, Ramotar said.
“This is the kind of partnership we are talking about, a partnership in which we are helping to create the basis for rapid social development for our country.”
The President also stated that his Administration has been working on several projects that are at varying stages of negotiation. He said that these investments will bring around US$2.5B in investments.
Back in August, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) had accused some sections of the media of irresponsible reporting.
General Secretary of the Party, Clement Rohee had claimed that there were sustained and calculated attacks by the Opposition and two media houses; namely the Stabroek News and Kaieteur News, on foreign investors, especially those of Chinese origin. Rohee’s statements came after both newspapers had questioned the operations of Chinese companies Bai Shan Lin and Vitrana.
Rohee had said that his party was convinced that “these targeted attacks are directed at the Chinese people in spite of their industrious predisposition which is evident throughout the world.”
