May Daniels, the mother of 15-year-old Shantel Callender, who was burnt about her body almost three weeks ago at La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD) says that the teenager is out of danger.
Callender sustained second and third degree burns to her back, abdomen, hands and legs when her jilted lover, who is now in police custody, set her mother’s house on fire, after killing her sister’s partner on September 22, last.
The teen’s sister, Zulina Callender, 20, and her three-year-old daughter, Princess Babb, also sustained burns about their bodies. They were treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and discharged.
The younger Callender however, remains a patient in the hospital’s Burn Care Unit.
Yesterday, the teen’s mother related that her daughter is now “coming around” after some three weeks. She added that the 15-year-old underwent surgery to her back last Monday.
She is scheduled to undergo another surgery some time soon.
“She is eating and talking… She is just getting pains about her body,” the mother said.
Asked what transpired on that fateful morning, Zulina Callender, a mother of two, said that she was awakened by a noise in the living room and got up to investigate.
She explained that before she stepped out of her bedroom, she noticed that the back door was open.
The older Callender claimed that she called out for her partner, Jason Munroe, and enquired whether he had left the door open but he responded in the negative.
“I peeked out of my room and I see my sister’s ex-boyfriend by the washroom and he see me too,” the older Callender claimed.
She continued, “He run in and push me and he hit Jason two times in his head and he (Jason) fall down and I get a hit too.”
According to the older Callender, after she received the blow to her head, she collapsed.
She claimed that when she regained consciousness, the house was on fire.
“I tried to wake up Jason but I think he was already dead because he get two hard hit with a big wood. I run to my daughter and picked her up from the bed and then I went to my sister and hold her and we come out,” the mother of two recalled.
She added that while running to the front of the yard and screaming for help, a car stopped and the driver transported them in his vehicle.
“He (driver) went in to get Jason but he come out back and say that Jason done get bun up and he couldn’t do anything,” Zulina Callender said.
Jason Monroe, 27, of Lot 308 La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara was allegedly beaten and burnt to death in house.
Investigations are still ongoing.
