Anthony, Ambrose & Hicks to contest Time Trials today
By Franklin Wilson in Suriname in association with Fitness Express
Guyana is seeking to continue its rich tradition of top performances when the 9th edition of the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships pedals off today in Paramaribo, Suriname with the Individual Time Trials.
Members of the Guyanese team smiles as they make the crossing to Suriname yesterday for this weekend’s action.
Michael Anthony and debutant Alanzo Ambrose will contest the Junior category, while another debutant, Andrew Hicks, the first person to win the National Juvenile Road Race Championship will take on his peers in the juvenile class.
Some fourteen countries including Guyana have assembled in Suriname for what is anticipated to be a spectacular 9th edition of their premier event for junior riders in these parts and while Guyana by no means specializes in Time Trials, the local riders are eager to show that they can compete and at the same time, according to Manager/Coach Mark Sonoram, “They are gaining valuable experience.”
The Guyanese have been categorized as one of the powerhouses in cycling at the junior level along with the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Puerto Rico who are both represented here in Suriname along with contingents from Aruba, Anguilla, Barbados, Bermuda, Curacao, St Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Jamaica, Grenada and French Guiana.
Junior girls and boys as well as juvenile boys will cover a distance of 16 km in the time Trials with the top three in each category being rewarded.
Sonoram, who himself is making his debut after the Guyana Cycling Federation’s first choice as Coach, Dwayne Gibbs opted out due to personal reasons, believes that the strength of the Guyanese team will be in full flow tomorrow in the Road Race.
The full Guyanese contingent will be on show as they seek to improve last year’s performance having won silver and bronze through Akeem Arthur and Michael Anthony who are both back and looking to keep the golden Arrowhead aloft.
The juveniles will cover a distance of 68 km while the juniors will traverse 92 km before ending. The first three to cross the finish line will again be rewarded. The team held a meeting last evening to strategize for today and tomorrow and were in very high spirits.
The Guyanese contingent was the very last to clear immigration at South Drain here in Suriname having travelled overland. Manager Sonoram approached the authorities to assist the team in expediting the process but they bluntly refused stating that a letter should have been sent to them two days ago in order for them to consider.
Despite being snubbed, the youngsters were patient and kept their focus on the task at hand, and that is taking care of the opposing teams that are here for the 9th Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships.
Either the President of Suriname or the Minister of Sport will declare the feature address at today’s official opening ceremony.
