The old idiom advocates that training children at a young impressionable age may produce long lasting and effective results and administrators of the South Ruimveldt Park Primary School were receptive to this theory when they held the Annual Inter House Athletics Championships at the Banks DIH Sports Club ground yesterday afternoon.
After several hours of keen competition, Alleyne House amassed 631 points and came out as champions while Drakes House scored 587 points to seal off the runners up position. Codrington House resided in the cellar with 571 points.
Lorana Beresford represented Drakes House and salvaged some pride for her unit when she was adjudged Champion Girl. She triumphed in the 1000m, 400m and the 100m races Oshazay Savory did likewise for Drakes House, winning the 1000m, 200m and the 100m races.
The children engaged in 35 events including the 1200m Boys U-12 Girls 1000m, also U-12. There were novelty events like the sack race for boys and girls, the shape race, where the tots ran over a certain distance and matched identical shapes as well as lime and spoon, needle and thread and late for school races.
The day’s activities culminated with the parents and teachers’ races. Headmistress of the school, Sandra Innis, joined other teaches and viewed the events while maintaining discipline. Activities were coordinated by Games Master, Royden Profit.
