– Younger brother discharged with minor injuries
A 10-year-old Mahaicony Primary School student is clinging to life in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being struck by a speeding car while on his way to school on Wednesday last.
The injured lad has been identified as Andre Monelall, of Lot 12 Fairfield, Mahaicony.
The accident, which reportedly occurred around 08:15 hrs on the Broom Hall, Mahaicony Public Road, has also resulted in Monelall’s eight-year-old brother, Andrew, sustaining minor injuries about his body.
He was treated at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital and sent away while his older sibling was transferred to the GPHC where he remains a patient on a life support machine.
According to information received, the siblings were heading west along the Broom Hall Public Road when a motorcar, which was heading in the same direction, struck them.
Kaieteur News was told that the 10-year-old was flung in the air before landing on the opposite side of the Public Road, while his younger brother held on to the vehicle.
Yesterday, the children’s father, Mark Monelall said that his older son is “in a bad state”. The father explained that he only had the opportunity of speaking with one doctor who is tending to his son, so far.
“The doctor said that he has brain damage, there is internal bleeding, and there is apparently some fluid leaking from his brain. He also has a fractured neck,” the father of four said.
He added that he has to speak with another doctor for additional information pertaining to his son’s injuries.
According to the senior Monelall, his son appears to be lifeless. “He is on a machine with wires all over him…He cannot speak, eat, move, or do anything.”
The father said that when he heard about the accident, he immediately rushed to the scene. Upon arriving, he was informed about the incident.
“The driver was coming from Berbice and my sons were in the corner. Andre was walking on the outside and he was holding his brother’s hand when the driver hit both of them. The car hit, and then pitch Andre over the road, and Andrew was left hooked under the car. I heard that the driver overtake on a double line,” the father claimed.
Meanwhile, the injured lads’ relatives have expressed dissatisfaction with the way the investigation is being conducted.
They noted that the driver was placed on bail while Andre Monelall continues to battle for life.
