…Resolves dispute between Corriverton IMC and resident
By Leon Suseran
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds visited Berbice on Monday. He made four stops along the coast. He was accompanied by Region Six Chairman, Mr. David Armogan and Member of Parliament, Mr. Faizal M. Jaffarally.
He visited the settlement of Gangaram where he interacted with residents and listened to some of their concerns, among them non- working streetlights and the rehabilitation of three major streets in the area. Mr. Hinds told residents that the streets will be completed before the end of the year.
Mr. Hinds then visited the Line Path, Corriverton area where he held talks between the officials of the Corriverton Interim Management Committee (IMC) and the proprietor of the Mahen Gas Station. The two parties had been engaged in an ongoing feud regarding the construction of a culvert at Line Path.
The Prime Minister was able to resolve the issue, while laying blame on the IMC for setting a precedence by allowing the owner of the gas station to build a portion of the culvert. The Prime Minister ruled that the owner of the gas station should continue the construction of the structure. However, he has to provide a walkway so that residents can have access to the roadway.
Both parties were in agreement and the matter was amicably settled.
Prime Minister Hinds then visited Number 43 Village where he held discussions with residents, particularly about the construction of a stretch of roadway in the area. The residents complained to the Prime Minister that 100 feet of roadway was left incomplete.
They complained that the engineer did not do proper measurement. Both Armogan and Hinds registered their disappointment with public officers who neglect to do their duties. Hinds ordered that the entire length of the road be constructed.
The Prime Minister then paid a courtesy call on the family of Chandra Kali Outar, victims of robbery at Number 48 Village, Corentyne. The family was robbed over $700,000 last week when two armed bandits stormed their home.
Hinds sympathised on behalf of the Guyana Government. He said that the government is working assiduously to improve security. He was disappointed with the allegations that the police did not respond to the robbery in a timely manner.
He added that government has been providing adequate resources to the police force in acquiring vehicles and other equipment and does not see the reason for the police not turning up at crime scenes in a timely manner. He said that he will certainly raise the issue with the Commissioner of Police.
Hinds added that security matters have been one of the major concerns of the government.
