Govt. suspends Region Ten’s laptop because of unruly mob

In what is believed to have been an orchestrated plot to cause disruption of the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) distribution in central Linden, staffers were on Tuesday forced to temporarily suspend the distribution exercise at the Constabulary tarmac.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) release, the distribution in the mining community started on Saturday at the Constabulary tarmac and up until Monday evening, a total of 1020 laptops were distributed in a smooth exercise to residents of that region. An additional 1300 new applications were made.
On Tuesday when the decision was made to suspend the distribution, that was the day set aside to cater for the disabled, vulnerable and pensioners.
Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Juan Edghill who was present at the exercise sought to get the unruly crowd to give way to the different groups that were to be attended to, but despite his efforts, they remained unresponsive.
Residents most of whom were first time applicants were adamant that they should be given preference since they were told first time applicants were receiving laptops on the spot.
However, for the safety of the staff and the equipment, a decision was made to suspend the distribution exercise for the day.
According to Minister Edghill a new approach has been adopted as the OLPF team continues the distribution exercise in Region Ten.
The new approach will ensure that persons who applied in the past and have been verified and have qualified will be contacted and given their laptops.
Further persons were warned against purchasing OLPF application forms in the Region.
The distribution exercise continued on Wednesday in Kwakwani and Spikeland and will continue in other communities in Region Ten throughout the week.
Under the OLPF initiative close to 4000 families in Region Ten are expected to receive their devices.
