Dear Editor,
The Development Committee of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) is charged with the “responsibility for the planning, organising and executing of all levels of training courses etc. for coaches, athletes, officials and clubs.
Together with the Technical Committee, it shall nominate persons for overseas training to the Executive Council.” (Outlined in section 22 (4) of the Constitution of the Association).
Unfortunately for the reporting period of 2013, the Committee was unable to carry out its mandate due to a number of factors. However, in April 2013, a status report on the Development Committee Activities and the concept note on the Master Plan for the AAG were submitted to Mr. Aubrey Hutson as was requested.
A document suggesting areas/ideas for incorporation in a Development Plan for the AAG was also forwarded to the Executive Council for discussion. To enhance the value and image of athletics towards media, the young, fans and institutions, the development Committee wrote NCN seeking air time for the Development of an athletic television programme to promote and rebrand the sport.
A favorable response was received from NCN however the Association was unable to run with the programme because of lack of funds. To improve efficiency of governance in Athletics a proposal was forwarded by the Development Committee to the Secretary General of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) for assistance to hold workshops, seminars and lectures for Coaches/Trainers/Officials.
The Committee did not receive a response from the GOA in this regard. As has become the norm, no funds were available from the IAAF Grant for the development of Athletics. It should be pointed out that there is an urgent need for transparency and accountability in the administration of athletics in Guyana for development to be realised.
Respectfully,
Wayne Walcott
Chairman
AAG Development Committee
Committee Members: Mr. Claude Blackmore; Mr. Mark Scott (resigned from the AAG some time ago); Mr. Harry Baptiste; Mr. Charles Griffith and Ms. Wanda Richmond.
