A 26-year-old construction worker accused of pouncing on a patron with a gun at a popular fast food outlet at the Stabroek Market Square in a daring robbery attempt last Friday was remanded to prison when he appeared in court yesterday.
Calvin Dover of Bent Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, was taken at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to respond to attempted robbery as well as charges of unlawful possession of a fireman and ammunition.
The first charge read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry alleged that last Friday (September 26) at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, while being armed with a gun, he attempted to rob Dave Rodrigues.
It is also alleged that Dover had a 9mm pistol and eleven live rounds of matching ammunition at the said time, when he was not licenced to carry same.
The 26-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charges and submitted a bail application through his lawyer, Adrian Thompson.
According to the Police, about 19:00 hours, the victim (Rodrigues) was sitting at the Demico House outlet when Dover placed a gun to his head and attempted to rob him.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant said that the victim retaliated and the two ended up in a scuffle, during which Rodrigues managed to disarm the accused.
He related that the police was contacted and Dover was arrested. Further investigations led to him being charged.
The Prosecution made a request for the accused to remain in custody. Grant cited the serious nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. He said that Dover used a firearm and added that the weapon was recovered.
He also related to the Court that Dover has a pending unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition case before city Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
Meanwhile, Thompson, in his address to the court, claimed that his client was a victim of robbery who had been struck to his head. He added that the police took the accused to the hospital, and that there is a medical to show the injuries he had sustained.
The lawyer contended that the facts presented by the Prosecution were not entirely correct.
Notwithstanding the application, bail was refused and Dover was remanded to prison. The matter is set to be called again on October 17.
