An eyewitness has recounted that the two cars involved in the collision, which led to the death of motorcyclist Rayshan Cook Sunday night, had been speeding along the West Demerara Public Road.
Cook, 21, a worker attached to the Transport and Harbours Department reportedly died on the spot after he was struck by the two cars in the vicinity of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara.
Cook, a resident of Crane Housing Scheme, WCD was said to be heading home at the time of the incident.
Police in a press release, yesterday stated that investigations have so far revealed that Cook was riding motorcycle CE 4340 about 20:40 hours on Sunday, when he collided with two motor vehicles.
According to the police, the victim sustained injuries about his body and was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
However an eyewitness recounted that the young man, who had been riding his motorcycle had stopped at the side of the road to answer his cell phone, when he was struck by a speeding car and run over by another.
When the accident occurred the vehicles, a Toyota Raum with Licence plate number HC 1536 and a Toyota Premio were said to be heading west in the direction of Parika, East Bank Essequibo.
An eyewitness said that the two vehicles were apparently racing along the public road when it hit Cook, who was headed in the opposite direction.
Jemeil Henry, a close friend of the deceased, who arrived on scene shortly after the incident occurred told this newspaper that the cars were considerably damaged and the motorcycle was completely mangled.
“I get a call that my friend get in an accident and I rush over to the scene because I was not far from there. When I reach I see Cookie lying in the middle of the road, in pool of blood and the cars a reasonable distance away,” Henry said.
He noted that the number plate which was affixed to the Toyota Raum motorcar had been removed.
He claimed that his friend was badly injured but that he lived for a short while after the accident.
“He was breathing and a woman who saw what happened tried to get persons to assist in taking him to hospital but no one stopped.”
Kaieteur News understands that the drivers of the motor vehicles had been taken into police custody to assist with investigations. Shortly after the incident the damaged motorcars were taken to the Leonora Police Station, where they were impounded.
Several of the victim’s relatives and friends expressed shock at his passing.
“I still can’t believe he‘s gone. I am still in shock. He’s was one of the kindest person I know with a beautiful heart” another friend lamented. Cook is survived by his mother, and two siblings.
