Smythfield Rockers squeeze past New Amsterdam Warriors
By Samuel Whyte
As is anticipated on most occasions when Smythfield Rockers and New Amsterdam Warriors clash, the encounter most times goes down to the wire. Their latest meeting was no exception as they locked horns in the final of the Legend Classic Basketball Competition which was held last Sunday at the Port Mourant GuySuCo Training School Court.
In the end after an epic battle the Rockers straightened up enough to squeeze out a tight 47-44 victory.
For the Rockers it was sweet revenge as the Warriors had gotten the better of them in another nail biter 50-49, in the final of the Inaugural Anamaya Memorial Inter-club Basketball Competition.
The Warriors started fast and surprised the Rockers who took some time to steady themselves as they led at the end of the first quarter 9-8. By the second session it was the Rockers who were in control as they established an eight point lead to take the half time whistle at 28-20.
The encounter was more intense in the third stanza with Warriors fighting to regain control and Rockers keeping their composure to hold them off and the session ended at 36-33.
The encounter continued with the game wide open. The final two minutes was as intense as it could be with the Warriors prepared for the fight, with former National selectee Carlos Crandon scoring from down town to see them just one point behind at that stage. With one minute to go, Warriors took the lead for the first time since the first segment when Shemroy McKenzie dumped in a two pointer.
However, within that final minute, Rockers were not to be denied as Trevor Loo scored a three pointer to take his team back in front. Both sides fought for control, however, Jamal Felix was able to put the situation beyond reach as he scored another two pointer for The Rockers.
Jason Fraser led the way for Rockers with 11 points with support coming from Michael Bowen 10 and Tyrone Dey 7 points.
Jevaun Enoch Vanderstoop had a game high of 12 points for the Warriors with Crandon and Kevin Thom supporting with 10 points each. Jason Fraser was named most valuable player.
Six teams took part in the competition which was played on a round robin basis in two groups.
The competition was sponsored by Ponai’s Pharmacy, MPG Packaging, A. Ally and Sons and Nand Persaud and Company Limited and Digicel.
The coordinator was Vibert Garrett.
