Despite the absence of at least three categories (Group 4, 125cc and Shifter karts), those that competed in the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club ‘Race of Champions’ Meet still managed to produce some riveting performances yesterday, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Among those registering outstanding performances were B.M. Soat-sponsored Rameeze Mohamed, who piloted his Toyota Starlet to three first place finishes, young Matthew Vieira , who dominated the Superbike division, while Chet Singh, Shane Seejattan and Shairaz Roshandin had one win apiece in the Group 2 category.
Witnessed by a small sized crowd the racers thrilled the fans with their skill and spirited rivalry that had many of the fans on the edge of their seats, especially in the Group 2 and 3 categories.
Roshandin’s win in the second Group 2 race was perhaps the best victory of the day as Seejattan, who was having a good time recording some blistering laps as he led for almost the entire race, before Roshandin made a daring pass on the inside as they entered the clubhouse turn, never relinquishing his lead thereafter to take the chequered flag.
Earlier, Singh had taken the first Group 2 race, but he had to settle for two third places after that.
Vieira was also in impeccable form as he took full advantage of Joel Neblett’s misfortune after he suffered mechanical problems to capture both Superbike races with another young and upcoming rider Kevin Persaud trailing him on both occasions.
But, without doubt the day belonged to Group 3 champion Mohamed, who produced a flawless performance to upstage even the usually dominant Danny Persaud among others, racing to three chequered flags in the process.
In the Group 1 category, Azaad Hassan claimed two of the three Group 1 races, while Vicky Persaud won the other.
The disappointment of the day was the absence of the Group 4 competitors.
