“I took up where he left off,” these are the words of Guyanese forward Pernell Schultz who scored and then assisted in the other goal which saw T&T Pro League side Caledonia AIA to a 2-1 win over Point Fortin Civic FC in the T&T Pro League, over the weekend.
Starting in Caledonia’s first game of the new season, Schultz has proven his two goals for Caledonia at the end of the last season was no fluke.
After a goalless first half, the hosts Point Fortin was first to score from an Akeem Redhead finish in the 48 minute.
Two minutes later Schultz was put through by Keyon Edwards and the diminutive striker rounded a defender before blasting home the equalizer for Caledonia.
It took only 8 minutes for Schultz to turn provider as he delivered a pin point cross for Keyon Muja Edwards to head home what turned out to be the winner for Caledonia in the 58th minute.
The 20-year-old Pernell Schultz, into his third year in Trinidad with Caledonia was surprisingly not invited to join the Guyana National Team for the recent CFU Qualifiers.
Schultz and Canadian born Golden Jaguar Taylor Benjamin are the two Guyanese players in the current Caledonia AIA team. The team is coached by former Guyana National Team Coach, Jamaal Shabazz.
Benjamin played the full 90 minutes at right back while Schultz was substituted ten minutes to full time to a standing ovation from the Caledonia bench. Schultz, a former Fruta Conquerors player went to Caledonia in 2011 but was loaned by the Pro League club to Maracas FC a team competing in the lower division.
With three games left in the 2013 season Shabazz recalled Schultz to boost a faltering Caledonia attack and he rewarded the Coach with two goals in three matches.
Scoring in the clubs first game of the new season the Guyanese striker seems bent on continuing in the mold of attacking players the likes of Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington and Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson who made huge impacts on the TT Pro League.
