A 47-year-old porknocker was brutally chopped on Saturday at Goat Creek, Karrau Backdam, Region Seven, reportedly after being accused of “working black magic” to sabotage a gold miner’s business.
Errol Cornelius, the victim, said that he was chopped several times by another miner, who accused him of burying “strange items” which were “tied to black magic,” in the miner’s yard.
Cornelius said that he was employed with the man about four months ago in the Karrau Backdam.
Cornelius said that the “gold was not making during the time” and so he decided to seek employment with another dredge owner.
Cornelius said that this incensed his former boss, who began to spread rumours that the miner worked “black magic” on him to sabotage his business.
Cornelius said that he was passing the man’s house at around 06: 30 hours when the confrontation started.
“When I was passing his house, he shout and tell me that I work black magic on he and he business, causing he get sick and lose nuff money and customers at his shop.
After I tell he that I don’t know about that and is not me, he and he friend start run me down the road with a cutlass.”
The gold miner said that he was eventually cornered by the duo after he fell. He said the former boss chopped him several chops to his arms, head, and face.
Cornelius said some residents came to his rescue, while the attackers fled.
He was treated at the Bartica Hospital.
Cornelius said the ranks from the Bartica Police Station visited the hospital, and he provided a statement on the assault.
He said that ranks informed him that the culprit was not found at his residence when they went to investigate the matter. However, they assured him that investigations are still ongoing.
Cornelius was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
