The Linden Hospital Complex (LHC) yesterday went a step further towards improved health care delivery, with the official commissioning of the Centre for Laparoscopic surgery.
The Facility was sponsored by the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China.
Although the facility was only officially commissioned yesterday it had been in use for some time, according to reports.
Laparoscopic surgery, commonly referred to as keyhole surgery, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) or band-aid surgery is a new and advanced surgical technique.
The technique involves operations that are carried out through small incisions in the body; hence the popular name “Keyhole surgery”.
Among those in attendance at the simple ceremony were His Excellency Zhang Limin, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Shamdeo Persaud, Hon. Li Bin, Minister of Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China and Mr Mortimer Mingo, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the LHC, and healthcare professionals within the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Persaud said that the LHC is a very important facility that serves a ‘significant proportion of the Guyanese populace’.
And in alluding to the new unit Dr. Persaud said that the “collaborative knowledge” of staff designated to the laparoscopic Centre will certainly lend towards improvement in dealing with some of the major health issues. He also expressed satisfaction with the contribution of the staff towards the proper functioning of the facility since it commenced operations.
Meanwhile the Hon. Li Bin said it was a pleasure to join His Excellency Zhang Limin and CMO Dr Persaud to witness the event.
She said that it represents the “advancement of medical techniques” at the medical institution and also represents the cordial relationship between Guyana and China.
“On behalf of the Chinese Health and Family Planning Commission, I would like to formally congratulate the inauguration of this Centre. In the health area we have conducted in-depth, concrete operations for the past many years. Twenty one years ago, China deployed the first of the China medical team to Guyana, and so far has already sent altogether, 124 medical workers. For many years the Chinese medical teams have devoted themselves to provide good services to the local people and patients…It may be easy for one country or one person to provide a good thing for another country, but for many years, for a long run it may not be so easy to provide such good stuff. The Chinese people see the Guyanese people as our brothers and sisters and will provide sincere aid and help to the Guyanese people,”she noted.
She added that the commissioning of the Centre represents a new beginning of many more achievements for the LHC.
