…an alarming 31 in jail awaiting trial for murder
The June 2014 criminal sessions of the Berbice Assizes which began with Justice Brassington Reynolds presiding closed on Friday with Justice Navindra Singh. Attorney at law Renita Singh was the state prosecutor in the matters.
A number of matters were completed including one for murder in which accused Naresh Ramjohn called ‘Sadam’ was jailed for 55 years. Rape accused Talbert McPherson was also jailed for 25 years after being found guilty.
Superintendent of Prisons and Officer in Charge of the New Amsterdam Prisons, Linden Cornette presented the jail delivery at the end of the sessions before Justice Navendra Singh. In his presentation he stated that some 37 persons are in jail awaiting trial, 31 of them for murder.
Of that 31 awaiting their time in jail on the capital offence, four are willing to plead. There are three persons in jail awaiting trial for sexual penetration while there is one each for carnal knowledge, unlawful wounding and possession of firearm without a licence.
They are all requesting early trial.
Meanwhile the October session of the Berbice Criminal court is expected to commence on October 21 with the traditional ceremonial march past and inspection of the ranks in front of the Berbice High Court, Esplanade Road, New Amsterdam.
