– to train doctors to boost delivery of health care
The Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Health is currently exploring the option of inviting Chinese tutors to teach at the University of Guyana’s School of Medicine. This is according to Minister of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsaran, who informed that “this will allow us, in a cost-effective manner to sustainably produce a larger number of Guyanese doctors.”
This disclosure was made yesterday even as the Health Minister represented Guyana in inking an agreement to sustain bilateral relations with China in the area of health. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was done at the Guyana International Conference Centre ahead of which Minister Ramsaran, together with his Chinese counterpart Lin Bin, Minister of National Health and Family Planning, hosted a media briefing.
According to Ramsaran in brief remarks, the Government of China in recent years has assisted considerably with the training of Guyanese doctors in China. Moreover, he noted that the expansion of this cooperation between the two countries “is right since the initial experience with a small number of Guyanese medical students has been excellent.”
Currently the local health sector is benefiting from the expertise of an Orthopaedic Technician who was trained in China and graduate doctors from Chinese medical schools recently commenced post graduate medical training programmes.
“We have indeed come a far way…the Government and people of Guyana will be forever grateful for the opportunity given to young Guyanese committed to realising their dreams and aspirations of becoming medical doctors and dental surgeons…Guyana is proud of these young people,” said Minister Ramsaran of the graduate doctors.
In fact, the Minister was keen in emphasising that the Chinese-trained doctors are a daily reminder to the hundreds of patients of the support and generosity of China.
Moreover, he disclosed that he is looking to explore the option of inviting the Chinese faculty to come to Guyana to expand its cadre of Chinese-trained medical practitioners.
Guyana has been collaborating with China for a number of years in health with the 11th Chinese Medical team recently arriving to continue their support to the local health sector. And according to Minister Ramsaran, “we look forward to the 12th team making its contribution in even more locales in our dear country.”
Thus far, the Chinese Medical team which is changed every two years has rendered its expert service to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and at the Linden Hospital Complex. And the possibility exists that members of the team will also be utilised in Mabaruma and Lethem areas, in the near future, the Minister intimated.
He disclosed that while Guyana is well on its way to achieving the Millennium Development Goal on safe motherhood there are however some challenges. But according to the Health Minister, “the Chinese obstetricians have performed well over the decades…this is another area of strength of the Chinese Medical team which has caught the eye of the Government.”
Speaking at the press briefing through an interpreter yesterday, Lin Bin said that the support China has been offering to Guyana has allowed for the completion of over 5,000 cataract operations. During the past week in excess of 100 such cases were conducted by a visiting Chinese medical team at the GPHC. “Just now (yesterday) I visited the Georgetown Public Hospital and I saw the patients that have recovered from the surgeries; I can see the desire and happiness of the relationship between the two countries,” she noted.
Today the Chinese Health Minister, along with her delegation, will participate in an inauguration ceremony for a Centre for Laparoscopic Surgery at the Linden Hospital Complex. During that visit the team will interact with patients who have received laparscopic surgery.
In fact, the Chinese National Health Minister assured that China will continue to provide support to Guyana in this area among others such as “to train more human resources in terms of health so that there is a medical team that never leaves Guyana.”
The MoU inked between Guyana and China, which became effective yesterday, will have duration of five years and is expected to be automatically renewed every five years unless one party provides the other written notice of the termination of the MoU at least three months prior to its expiration.
