A man who was nabbed with a quantity of marijuana in a car around 22:00 hrs on Sunday evening during a police dragnet has been jailed.
The man, Gavin Reece, called ‘Buckman’, 25, of Berbice River and Naresh Street, Canefield, East Canje, appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus on Wednesday in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
He pleaded guilty. On Sunday September 21, 2014 at Sheet Anchor, East Canje Berbice he had in his possession 3.6 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.According to prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter, on the day in question the police were on mobile patrol in the Sheet Anchor area when they noticed Motor Car HC 3384 with three occupants, including a woman proceeding from beneath the Canje River Bridge.
The vehicle was stopped and the driver was questioned. The police then proceeded to search the vehicle and the occupants. They noticed a black haversack between the legs of the defendant.
The bag was searched and nine parcels of what was suspected to be leaves, seeds and stems of the cannabis sativa plant were found inside. The occupants were arrested and escorted to the Central Police Station and the car was impounded.
Reece later claimed possession of the drugs and confessed to the crime.
“Ah does hustle lil weed in Berbice River and so on.” He was sentenced to three years in jail and fined an additional $30,000.
