This week we bring another bit of sporting facts to our readers, complied by Statistician Charwayne Walker. In this series we have been talking football, highlighting the rich heritage of our football, looking at the notable moments in Guyana’s history.
Did you know that Guyana was the only country that defeated Alex Ferguson touring St. Mirren Scottish Division One Team in 1976?
Did you know that recently retired General Manager of Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson toured the Caribbean as Manager of the Scottish Division One Team St. Mirren in June, 1976? Alex Ferguson and St. Mirren were using the 1976 Caribbean tour for preparation for the Scottish first division season.
Ferguson’s Boys opened the 1976 Caribbean Campaign with a one-nil victory against Barbados at the National Stadium in Bridgetown. St. Mirren’s next stop was Port-of-Spain where they defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-nil in a three match series. The Boys from Scotland won the series opener one-nil, drew the second contest nil all, and won the decider one-nil. After the Trinidad triumph Sir Alex Boys deplaned at Timehri International looking to continued their unbeaten run and started the Guyana leg of their Caribbean Tour with a commanding 4-one drubbing of the Guyana National Team at GCC Bourda. Goal scorers for St. Mirren were Len Richardson, Frank McGarvey and a double by Jack McGillvary, Bunny Anthony was the lone Guyanese Goal scorer.
In the series finale at GFC Ground, Guyana behind goals from Pele’s FC duo Vibert ‘Durdy’ Butts and Patrick ‘Labba’ Barton ended Sir Alex and St. Mirren unbeaten run with an emphatic two-one victory. Donny McDonald was the lone goal scorer for St. Mirren. After the two-one loss to Guyana, St. Mirren travelled to Paramaribo and trashed Suriname 4-nil.
