A 34-year-old contractor is hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after he was shot twice and robbed of $1.6M by two gunmen on a motorcycle.
The robbery occurred around 14:30 hrs on Friday in the vicinity of Eccles “Old Road”, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Injured is Harry Persaud of Lot 139 Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE). He was shot to his left arm and thigh.
Up to press time Persaud was in the hospital’s Emergency Room waiting to be transferred to the Male Surgical Ward.
According to information received, the contractor and one of his colleagues had just left a city bank after making a withdrawal of $1.6M for payments to employees.
While in the vicinity of Eccles Old Road, the driver of a white Toyota 212 motor vehicle drove and blocked Persaud and his colleague’s vehicle, forcing them to stop.
“When they stop, two guys on a motorcycle rode up to them and pulled the colleague out of the vehicle and shot Persaud twice. His colleague was driving. The bandits raised the driver’s seat where the money was and grabbed it and escape,” a police source said.
Kaieteur News was told that investigators believed it was an “inside job.” They are currently interrogating several persons, including Persaud’s colleague who escaped unhurt.
Investigations are in progress.
