As Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Project (CIIP) gathers
momentum, the three burial grounds in Wakenaam, Region Three, have been cleared of dense vegetation, while work has commenced on other cemeteries in the region.
When officials of the Ministry of Housing and Water visited the Stewartville/Cornelia Ida Neighborhood Democratic Council (NDC) on Wednesday, Regional Community Enhancement Officer, Nazir Khan, said that efforts are being made to achieve the core aim of CIIP- “to improve access and aesthetics in communities across the country while fostering greater community cohesion.”
He said that the facelift of the three cemeteries in Wakenaam, San Souci, Maria’s Pleasure, and Caledonia, began on August 18 and took approximately eight days to be completed. Khan explained that the clearing exercises were done by a group of 13 Community Enhancement Workers, who removed several Africanized bee hives, snakes and de-bush most of the thick vegetation in the cemeteries.
Khan said that the clearing of the Stewartville Burial Ground has also advanced tremendously, allowing a clear view of the ground and its environs. According to the Regional Community Enhancement Officer, like several other cemeteries, the Stewartville Burial Ground had not been cleaned for decades. This fact has contributed to the denseness and sturdiness of the vegetation. He said that the workers still have a significant portion of work to do.
Under La Jalousie/Nouvelle Flanders NDC, Khan said that eight workers were tasked with clearing overgrown vegetation from La Jalousie Cemetery. He said that on clearing approximately 80 percent of the vegetation, two Africanized bee swarms were discovered hidden in the thick vegetation of the cemetery. He noted that the Ministry recently recruited the services of a beekeeper to effectively remove the swarms.
Khan explained that the de-bushing of La Jalousie Cemetery commenced on September 8 and was completed on September 24.
He also said that works being executed in the cemeteries of the Hague/ Blankenburg NDC were stalled, owing to the presence of Africanized bees. He noted that at present the seven labourers attached to this NDC are removing vegetation from the parapets and clearing community drains.
Khan explained that the works being done under the CIIP have captured the attention of the public, who are pleased to see the burial grounds being cleared after decades. He opined that the communities appear more welcoming since most of the cemeteries are visible from the public thoroughfare.
Also present at Stewartville/ Cornelia Ida NDC on Wednesday, was the Chairman of Region Three, Julius Faerber, who said the project has significantly benefited the Region’s NDCs, and its outputs will add to the development of the communities.
CIIP is being implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Water and is geared towards benefiting residents in the 65 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs). The project also has employment opportunities for over 1,200 persons. Labourers engaged in this project are tasked with weeding parapets, cleaning residential drains and clearing cemetery and crematorium grounds.
