Shantel Callender, the 15-year-old who sustained burns about her body when her jilted lover set her
mother’s house on fire, after killing her sister’s partner last Monday, remains in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The teenager is in the Burn Care Unit while her three-year-old niece, Princess Babb, is a patient in the hospital’s Paediatric Ward.
Babb was burnt to her hands and forehead.
The tragedy which occurred around 13:00 hrs on September 22, last, at Lot 201 La Parfaite Harmonie, has also left the teenager’s 20-year-old sister, Zulina Callender, nursing burns about her body.
She was rushed to the GPHC to seek medical attention but was later discharged.
According to the victims’ mother, May Daniels, while her granddaughter is recovering from her wounds, her daughter’s condition seems not to be improving. She added that Shantel was burnt about her entire body.
Kaieteur News understands that the 15-year-old and the suspect, who is believed to be in his early thirties, were involved in a relationship which reportedly ended two days before he set the house on fire.
Recounting what took place that day, Zulina Callender, a mother of two, said that she was awakened by a noise in the living room and got up to investigate.
She explained that before she could have stepped out of her room, she noticed that the back door was open.
The older Callender claimed that she called out for her partner, Jason Monroe, and asked him if he had left the door open but he responded in the negative.
“I peeped out of my room and I see my sister’s ex-boyfriend by the washroom and he see me too,” the older Callender claimed.
She continued, “He (sister’s jilted lover) run in and push me and he hit Jason two times in his head and he (Jason) fall down and I get a hit too.”
According to the older Callender, after she received the blow to her head, she collapsed.
She claimed that when she regained consciousness, the house was on fire.
“I tried to wake up Jason but I think he was already dead because he get two hard hit with a big wood. I run to my daughter and picked her up from the bed and then I went to my sister and hold her and we come out,” the mother of two recalled.
She added that while running to the front of the yard and screaming for help, a car stopped and the driver transported them in his vehicle.
“He (driver) went in to get Jason but he come out back and say that Jason done get bun up and he couldn’t do anything,” Zulina Callender said.
Jason Monroe, 27, of Lot 308 La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara was allegedly beaten and burnt to death in house.
