Some of the top performing students of the Bartica, Region Seven area were
recently awarded for their outstanding performances at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Examination (CSEC) and the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA).
At an inaugural awards ceremony spearheaded and convened by the Bartica Interim Management Committee/Neighbourhood Democratic Council (IMC/NDC) seven students were identified as the best performers of the Bartica locale.
The ceremony, which was held in the Boardroom of the IMC, saw Three Miles students Lorenzo Jacobis with 12 Grade One passes; Kimberly Paul with eight Grade One passes and Antonio Jones with seven Grade One passes being presented with trophies for their respective performances.
From the Bartica Secondary School, the awardees were Dexter Baptiste, Daniel Helligar and Sarah David.
The Region’s top NGSA performer, Ruby Hodge of the St Anthony’s Primary School along with runner-up, Ravi Ramdass of the High Achievers School of Academics, were also among those who were awarded at the ceremony on Friday September 19 last.
According to the IMC’s Public Relations and Press Officer, Sherwyn Downer, this is the first year that the IMC has held an awards ceremony, an undertaking he described as historic. “Never before in the history of Bartica or the existence of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council has an event like this one ever been recorded,” said Downer.
In fact, he revealed that based on a concise investigation of the operations of the 65 NDCs across the country, the Bartica IMC/NDC is the only one that budgeted for such an event.
Moreover, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker, has lauded the move by the IMC/NDC. He regarded the honouring of the top performing students as a strategic way of giving back to the community of Bartica.
The ceremony saw the attendance of top officials of the Region including the Regional Executive Officer, Peter Ramotar; Deputy Regional Executive Officer, Derreck Persaud and Regional Education Officer, Charles Holmes.
Remarks delivered by IMC Chairman, Mr. Ovid Benjamin; the REO and education officials at the ceremony all echoed the same sentiment “that Bartica has done exceptionally well amidst challenges this year…and the signs and indications are there that education in Bartica and Region Seven as a whole is out of the woods.”
Downer himself in acknowledging the success of the students noted that “the IMC wishes all the young top performers nothing but the best in their future endeavours.”
But they will however not be the only beneficiaries of the IMC/NDC, as according to Downer, “the IMC has a vested interest in the educational advancement of the young people of Bartica and the entire Region Seven and will continue to support their performances.”
Moreover, he revealed plans in place by the IMC to soon travel to other Region Seven areas including Waramadong and Upper Mazaruni to honour the top performing students there at a ceremony to be held at the Waramadong Secondary School.
The IMC which has been in existence for just about two years has been seeking to improve the society of Bartica and has therefore been lending tremendous support to entities such as the Bartica Community Policing Group and the religious community, among others.
