Guyana to play first three games at Providence
By Sean Devers
The upcoming season will usher in the franchise system for First-Class cricket in the Caribbean and will also see one winner being crowned after the round-robin phase. There will be no knockout for the next season.
Guyana oppose the Leewards Islands at Providence in their opening game in the next Regional First-Class season which is scheduled for November 14- 17 while they will again be at home to the Windwards Islands at Providence from November 21-24.
The Guyanese will then have their third home game at Providence when they clash with Barbados from November 28 – December 1 while their first ‘away’ match will be from December 5–8 when they face Trinidad & Tobago at the Queens Park Oval in Port-of-Spain.
At the end of the fourth round which is on December 8, there will be a break for the Christmas season.
The Nagico tournament follows from January 3 before another six rounds of matches will be played in the second phase when a winner will be crowned on March 19 as the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) moves away from the double crown format which existed last season.
There were two winners for 2014, as one champion was crowned after the round-robin phase and another of the knockout that involved the top four teams from the round robin.
In a bid to improve the standard of the game in the Caribbean, the WICB has adopted a new plan by its Cricket Operations Manager Richard Pybus. This plan will see an extension to the cricket season and each team will now play a total of ten matches with five being at home and five away.
