Furniture and Home Alliances giant Courts Guyana Inc. which is currently celebrating its 21st year of existence here made another quantum leap in firmly establishing itself among the leading corporate entities assisting in the development of sports after pledging $2.8 million in sponsorship for the hosting of the 4th Annual Petra Organisation-organised Pee Wee Football Competition.
Yesterday, during a simple ceremony which was conducted in the Business entity’s Boardroom, Marketing Manager Pernell Cummings handed over the cheque to Petra Organisation Co-Director Troy Mendonca which is to go towards hosting the tournament that is expected to run from October 4 – November 8, at the Banks DIH Sports Club ground.
Apart from Cummings and Mendonca, other officials present were Courts Public Relations and Promotions Officer Roberta Ferguson, Deputy CEO of the Ministry of Education Marcel Hutson and Petra representative Mark Alleyne.
Cummings speaking at the occasion expressed on behalf of the Company how pleased they are to see the tournament grow and get better every year since its inception. The Marketing Manager shortly after promising the Company’s support in the future urged teachers, coaches, parents and fans of the sport to be very patient with the young players, many of who will be getting involved in the sport for the first time.
He also called on the students to display good discipline, reminding them that even though there will be winners and losers, in effect they are all winners simply by being participants in the competition.
Hutson, who deputised in the absence of Chief Education Officer Olato Sam, said he was happy to be present at the Launch, before offering commendation to Courts for staying the distance.
He stated that he is happy to know that the tournament unlike a few has been able to remain alive even after four years and this according to him must be so due to Courts unmitigated commitment towards youth development.
In a plea to the students, Hutson spoke of the importance of them being disciplined, citing Guyana and West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul as a prime example of that principle hence his undisputed success in the sport of his choice.
The Deputy CEO told the gathering that his Ministry is always looking to partner with serious stakeholders since they are about helping to develop well rounded and healthy citizens which in this case are the youths of tomorrow.
He closed by calling on other organisations to follow the path of Courts and help develop the youths of this country. Mendonca in his remarks said that the Organisation was once again pleased to be associated with the tournament informing that while the schools segment is now in its fourth year, they had started the junior football tournament among clubs two years prior.
According to Mendonca, Petyra Organisation is all about enhancing the physical aspirations of young people in an organised manner since it is their view that it is all part of instilling in them the need to lead healthy lifestyle, while discipline and team work are also learned during the process.
He gave a brief synopsis of how the tournament will be run and the rewards for winners and outstanding individuals. Twenty-four teams will participate in this year’s competition and they are: Marian Academy, Green Acres, West Ruimveldt, St. Margaret’s, St. Sidwell’s, Tucville, South Ruimveldt, North Georgetown, Ketley, St. Gabriel’s, F.E. Pollard, Enterprise, St. Pius, Comenius, Success, Redeemer, East Ruimveldt, St. Angela’s, Winfer Gardens, St. Stephen’s, Chase Academy, J.E. Burnham, St. Thomas More and St. Ambrose.
