Dear Editor,
Editor permit me an observation. I have been taught and have come to know that in a democracy the constitution is the foundation of its laws. The ultimate protector of the people’s rights. The principles under which they are governed. So it surprises me that the president of Guyana would utter such nonsense as he did in Brooklyn NY, and reported in Kaieteur News – Sept. 23/2014.
Under the caption – “ Pick one, it’s either Local Government or General elections – says Ramotar in New York “ “ “I campaigned and promised people that once we win the next elections, we will have local government elections very, very quickly. That is true, but I did not anticipate that we would have a one-seat minority in the Parliament. That created political uncertainty in the situation and in the body politics of the country,” Ramotar said. “
Editor, what type of idiots are in control of the government of Guyana? Doesn’t the president realize/know that political expediency is not a substitute for the constitution? The constitution of Guyana calls for local government elections at prescribed times. That’s it! Period. No excuses,
no politics. Guyanese must be resolute in their demand for constitutionally guaranteed rights or they will lose them.
