A 22-year-old man who reportedly jumped into another man’s jeep and drove away on Wednesday, was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Tiffon Peters of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, who appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman, is alleged to have stolen Rahul Archer’s Toyota Hilux soon after he parked the vehicle and went into Gismos and Gadgets on Wellington Street, Georgetown.
The court heard that about 10:45 hours on Wednesday (September 24) Archer parked the jeep and went into the store to purchase phone credit.
Police Prosecutor, Kerry Bostwick said that the man, who kept watch on his $3M vehicle, witnessed Peters go in and start up the vehicle. According to the Prosecution, Archer tried to stop the 22-year-old, but he drove away.
The Prosecutor reported that after a chase, Peters was nabbed in the vicinity of the Ministry of Tourism building, when the owner managed to jump into the vehicle.
Bostwick told the court that Peters then jumped out of the vehicle and tried to run away, but he was caught and handed over to the police at the Brickdam Station. Further investigations led to him being charged with simple larceny.
Before the arraignment, the accused was seen attempting to lie on the benches and was sent back to the prisoner’s docks twice for the odd manner in which he was behaving as the court was in session.
During the court hearing, Peters stood stoically before the Magistrate as a police Constable held him steady.
The charge was laid indictably and when an application for the case to be heard in the Magistrates’ court was made by the Prosecution, the young man did not respond.
He was repeatedly asked if he wanted the case tried in the lower courts, Peters did not reply but rather stood in the docks and stared in the distance.
A male family member then came forth and said, “He has some sort of sick. He goes to a doctor and gets treatment. Sometimes it’s every two month he behave so,” the young man explained.
The family member claimed that the 22-year-old had been charged before for a similar offence but was exonerated by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry who had presided over the matter.
The Prosecutor thereafter, made an application for him to be remanded to prison. Bostwick, in his objections to bail, cited the serious nature, prevalence and gravity of the offence.
Peters was remanded to prison and the case was adjourned. Peters will appear before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on September 29.
