Adams hits 50, Permaul grabs five-wkt haul
By Zaheer Mohamed
Berbice are in a comfortable position to take first innings points from Essequibo in the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior four-day Inter county tournament.
In reply to Essequibo’s first innings total of 173, Berbice closed the first day on 130-3 after facing 40 overs at the Demerara Cricket Club yesterday.
Skipper Narsingh Deonarine is unbeaten on 43 and with him is Jonathan Foo on 13.
Left arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul grabbed 5-54 as Essequibo were bowled out in 48 overs after lunch.
Berbice won the toss and asked Essequibo to bat on a track which offered much assistance to the bowlers early on. Kevon Boodie and Royan Fredericks added 20 for the opening stand before Boodie, who drove Keon Joseph to the cover boundary, was bowled by a beauty from Raun Johnson – a delivery which hit the top of the off stump after pitching on middle.
Fredericks started nervously, but matured as his innings progressed and drove Johnson for a boundary before steering Permaul through third man. The left handed former Guyana U-19 player took boundaries off Deonarine, but was caught by wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble off Permaul for 30 off 73 balls with six fours.
Ricardo Peters retired hurt on eight after he was hit on the arm by Permaul who removed Mark Gonsalves (00) to leave Essequibo at 107-3. Ricardo Adams played his shots after he got settled; he drove Deonarine for fours and hit Romario Shepherd DeJonge for another. The left hander from the Essequibo river island of Wakenaam then smashed Permaul for sixes over long-on before driving Devon Clements down the ground for fours.
After reaching his fifty, Adams continued to bat positively and drove Clements for another boundary, but Clements, who extracted considerable turn, had Adams stumped as the batsman chipped down the wicket. He top scored with 62 off 60 balls with nine fours and two sixes.
After his demise, Essequibo lost Anthony Adams (01) and Keano Harry (01) to slither to 144-6. Peters resumed his innings and showed promise, adding 27 for the seventh wicket with Brian Hubert. The stand was
beginning to look ominous and Deonarine changed his bowlers around in an effort to break their partnership and Clements provided it when he trapped Hubert lbw for 10. Peters rotated the strike well and picked up three fours before he tried to cut a ball too close to him and was caught behind for 38. Johnson removed Mark Tyrell (00) before Hemchand Persaud (00) was run out, bringing an end to the innings. Clements snared 2-25, Gudakesh Motie Kanhai 1-5 and Johnson 1-14.
Pacer Mark Tyrell had Kandasammy Surujnarine (05) well caught by Gonsalves at gully as Berbice lost their first wicket at 14. Seon Hetmyer and Clements steadied the innings somewhat as they took the score 63. Hetmyer pulled pacer Keyon Davis through mid-wicket for fours and hit Hubert for boundaries while Clements cut Hubert to the point boundary and smashed Tyrell through covers and long-off.
The pair continued to accumulate their runs on both sides of the pitch before Hetmyer was caught by wicketkeeper Boodie for 37 with four fours. Clements added a further 20 with Deonarine, but was soon trapped lbw to left arm spinner Anthony Adams for 21 (3×4). Deonarine mixed aggression with defence and has so far featured in an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 44 with Foo. Deonarine punched Adams through covers for boundaries and deposited him over mid wicket four a maximum. Essequibo could have had him back in the pavilion, but Hubert failed to catch the ball cleanly running in from deep mid-wicket after the batsman lofted Fredericks. Adam, Tyrell and Fredericks have so far taken one wicket each.
