Dear Editor,
Domestic violence is not being treated as an offence as was evident the other day when a report of this nature was made at the Aurora police station.
The victim of Vilvoorden, who is a relative of mine, reported being abused and severely beaten by her husband (name provided) who is a well known carpenter.
It was related to me by the victim that while at the station the Supervising Officer there advised her to go home back and live good with her husband. The Corporal also stated, “When man and wife story reach the court it does really look bad.”
But the advice was not given freely. It turned out to be somewhat expensive as her husband had to pay ten thousand dollars to settle the matter at the station level when the proper forum to do so is at the courts.
While a serious injustice was done to the victim the corrupt practice continues to further tarnish the reputation of the Force and undermines the confidence reposed in him by the state to serve and protect.
The husband was not even questioned moreso placed in the lock-ups. The officer usurped the functions of the D.P.P. and yet for all, collected the cash which will not go into the state’s coffers as would have been done had the matter engaged the attention of a Magistrate.
Judging from the stance taken by the officer a rise in domestic violence in this area will be inevitable when “pay offs” are made in the absence of the right action being taken to serve as a deterrent.
With thanks,
Name Provided
